Acme Studios and South Kiosk Application Process

  Acme Studios:

      Acme Studios with support from the Chelsea Arts Club Trust is offering a graduating student a twelve month rent-free studio 
      together with a bursary of £2,500.

      This will be the seventh Chelsea Studio Award which will begin 1 October 2016. There will be a dedicated ground floor shared 
      studio, with good access, for this award housed at an Acme

      Studios building in East London. The award studio will be shared with another Acme Studio    

      Award.

      The proposal must include:

•     A word document (.doc not docX – due to compatibility issues) or plain text file (e.g. .rtf) or a 
      PDF document (.pdf)

•     Full name and contact details (both phone and email) must be included at the top of the written       document.

•     Word length: 400 words max – please keep to one side.

•     Documents should be saved in the following format: FirstnameSurnameAWARDTITLE e.g.             JamesSmithACMEStudio.doc

•     If including picture please save separately to the text as a .jpg or .pdf

•     Images should be saved in the following format:

•     No more than two images may be included.

•     Unfortunately, we cannot accept moving image or sound as supporting material but can accept       stills.

  South Kiosk:

      A Mentoring Program - the prize offers a chance to work directly with the gallery, building a 

relationship through conversation and collaboration that will continue into the future past 

graduation.

South Kiosk is mainly interested in artists working in lens-based or computational media or  

whose work deals with themes of technology such as shown by these artists:

South Kiosk Confirmed for 2015

We are very pleased to announce that South Kiosk will be participating again in the prizes this year. South Kiosk, formally provided by sister organisation Jotta, have participated in the prizes for the last four years, the prize offers a chance to work directly with the gallery, building a relationship through conversation and collaboration that will continue into the future past graduation.

        The winner of the 2014 South Kiosk was Marie Kaus.
Winning the Jotta award has given Marie access to valuable contacts and help when needed, they are eager to help when applying for funding, and putting you in contact with useful contacts that are reverent and helpful to your practice.

          South Kiosk is still a relatively new commercial gallery. Through its exhibition programme and editorial platform South Kiosk seeks to explore the evolution of technology within art, investigating the impact of technological advancement, as well as the preservation of what is left behind. 

It provides:

Workshops 
Symposia and artist talks

Applicants should send 3 images of their work, along with just a few lines describing their work and its relation to technologies past, present and future. The award is open to artists working in all mediums, though there needs to be a connection to South Kiosk's interest in the evolution of technology within art.

Rosalie Schwieker Award 2015

Rosalie Schwieker has kindly come back for another award this year, which will be selected based on the submitted questionnaire and a visit of the degree show during the VIP breakfast.The Jury this year are Rosalie Schweiker and last year's RSA winner Vicky Chapman.

The Rosalie Schweiker Award is a year-long support scheme for a recently graduated artist or artist group. Theaward will be tailored to fit the recipient's work and could for example involve a residency at Rosalie Schweiker's Space Station Sixty-Five Bursary Studio, a co-production, meetings on a regular basis or a field trip. WHAT: Acme Studios with support from the Chelsea Arts Club Trust is offering a graduating student a twelve month rent-free studio together with a bursary of £2,500.

This will be the fifth Chelsea Studio Award which will begin 1 October 2015. The dedicated studio for this award is housed at Acme’s Warton House studios in Stratford, London, E15 http://www.acme.org.uk/studios/wartonhouse  The building, formerly the head office of Yardley Perfume Manufacturers was converted in 2014 to provide 24 studios. The 88sq meter (approx) studio, situated on the first floor and fully accessible, is shared with two other graduate awards, from MFA Goldsmiths and MA Central Saint Martins.

As part of the award, Acme Studios works with the selected student to provide appropriate ongoing mentoring and opportunities for professional development.

BACKGROUND: The award was set up in 2009 when Kiki Claxton and Harry Major, two second-year students at Chelsea School of Art, approached Acme for support in providing more appropriate prizes for graduating students. Aware of the difficulties graduate artists face and encouraged by Kiki and Harry’s pro-activeness, Acme offered to provide a studio rent-free, initially for six months which was subsequently extended to twelve months.

In 2010-2011 the Chelsea Studio Award was greatly enhanced as a result of a grant from Chelsea Arts Club Trust, who encourage art and design education, and provide help and support for artists and designers. Chelsea Arts Club Trust have generously continued to support this award annually.

APPLICATION: By written proposal with images (maximum 2) to be emailed to: Chelseaprize@gmail.com with the subject heading: Chelsea Studio Award 2015.

•     You must complete the application process following the guidelines above

•     You must be able to start the Studio Residency Award in October 2015

•     You must be eligible to remain in the UK for the 12 month period.

•     You must complete the monitoring form provided separately and send with your application.

DEADLINE: 5pm, Friday 15th May 2015

All applications will be considered and an initial short-list will be drawn up by a

panel of Chelsea teaching staff. Short-listed students will be informed and

asked to take part in a short informal interview alongside their degree show at

the Breakfast preview held on Friday 12^th June (TBC). The final selection will be

made by a panel consisting of an Acme representative and an invited external

artist.

South Kiosk confirmed for 2014 prizes!

     

         We are very pleased to announce that South Kiosk will be participating in the prizes this year. Formally presented by it's sister organisation Jotta, who have participated in the prizes for the last four years, the prize offers a chance to work directly with the gallery, building a relationship through conversation and collaboration that will continue into the future past graduation.

        The winner of the 2013 Jotta was Dan Ward, for his work 'Panasonic'. Dan has been working with Jotta and South Kiosk over this last year since graduating from Chelsea. Winning the Jotta award has given Dan access to valuable contacts and help when needed, they are eager to help when applying for funding, and putting you in contact with useful contact that are reverent and helpful to your practice. Currently, Dan's commission that he has been making for the past 6 months on the back of winning the award is nearly finished and Jotta/South Kiosk will be promoting and screening the work soon. It is this kind of useful, intimate relationship and the offer of guidance when needed that makes the South Kiosk award unique.

ACME award 2014!

ACME Studio Visit – Childers Street Studio’s for Stage Three Students interested in applying for the prize.

Friday 25^th April 11am meeting Naomi Fitzsimmons last years winner of the ACME studio prize. PLEASE try and be there on TIME, as we can not wait around to start the visit and you will not get in to the studio if your not there by 11am.

I will be taking a list of people interested in coming along at the Thursday 24 th meeting.

I will meet the group at the studio in Childers Street (Deptford). CORNER of ROLT and CHILDERS Street

Heather Deedman the one of the organisers of ACME will be there to answer questions you may have about the prize or indeed getting a studio.

The Chelsea Studio is situated on the ground floor, with good access, is approximately 300 sq ft with high ceiling and good natural daylight. The studio also sits adjacent to two other Graduate Residency Award studios offered to MA students, the Chadwell Award and the Adrian Curruthers Award.

As part of the award, Acme Studios works with the selected student to provide appropriate ongoing mentoring and opportunities for professional development.
